Heritage Malta
was set up in 2002 under the provisions of the Cultural Heritage
Act 2002. We started operations on 1st January 2003.
The agency reports to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth & Sport and is answerable to parliament through the Minister, Ms Dolores Cristina. Heritage Malta is led by a Board under the
direction of a Chairman, Dr Mario Tabone. Heritage Malta’s
Chief Executive Officer is Dr. Luciano Mule' Stagno.
Heritage Malta took over some 240 personnel from the former
Museums’ Department. Our staff complement is made up
of custodians, guides and wardens and an increasing number
of personnel with key expertise in heritage management and
conservation.
The Heritage sector in Malta has other official bodies with
whom we liaise closely. The Cultural Heritage Act provided
for a Committee of Guarantee and a Superintendence of Cultural
Heritage besides the Malta Centre for Restoration. The
former is an overarching body whose role is
to ensure that the spirit of the Cultural Heritage Act is
adhered to and that there is cooperation and understanding
between Heritage Malta and the Superintendence. The Superintendence
is in effect the ‘regulator’ of Malta’s
national cultural heritage.

in Malta, and the roles and responsibilities of all three
organisations, you can download Cultural
