With some 24
museums, collections and sites under our guardianship, Heritage
Malta is charged with preserving much of the nation’s
most fragile and unique cultural heritage for national posterity
as well as today’s visitors and those of future generations.
This is no easy feat. Our challenges range from maintaining
vast baroque palaces as well as the collections housed within
them, to the preservation of unique prehistoric structures
dating from 5000 B.C. All these require our urgent attention
if they are to survive modern-day environmental damage, everyday
wear and tear and the natural elements. We are also upgrading
the interpretation and marketing of our museums and sites
for greater visitor enjoyment and designing retail and other
visitor facilities at our major museums and sites.
In this section, we outline some of our current restoration
and conservation projects. For a full list of our capital
projects and priorities for 2003, click
