A number of projects are being undertaken by Heritage Malta which have either started in 2007 but will overlap over 2008 or that will start in 2008.
At the Hypogeum, we have plans for the upgrading of the insulation system linked to the climatic control at the Hypogeum, funding coming from the Hilton/HSBC 1 Euro per Night Scheme. Another Environmental Monitoring Project and 3D recording system is being planned to be funded under the EEA/Norwegian Funding mechanism.
At the Inquisitor's Palace, there is the continuation of the Restoration and Conservation project of the adjacent façade. This project will be finished in 2008. Other projects include the continuous upgrading of the electrical Installation and the upgrading of Sanitary Facilities.
At the National Museum of Archaeology, we are continuing our current Flagship project consisting of the Restoration and Conservation of façade, the upgrading of the Internal Marble Flooring and the Rehabilitation and opening of New Exhibition Display Areas. Other works include the installation of electrical system in the new display area, CCTV and Fire Prevention System.
At our Conservation Division at Bighi, which comprises also an extension of Head Office, we have started on a full 3 year plan which will consist in the rehabilitation of new workshop areas, the upgrading of Electrical and Telecommunications system and other landscaping areas.
At the Maritime Museum, we have upgrading works for the replacement of dangerous roofs and refurbishment of new exhibition area top include the Installation of new passengers lift. All works are expected to be finished by the end of December with an expenditure of over Lm 100K.
In conjunction with the Mosta Local Council, we are undergoing a valorisation project under the Interreg IIIA Malta-Sicilia at the Ta' Bistra Catacombs.
Under another Interreg IIIB Archimed Project, we have a 3D recording project and scientific analyses of the Ta' Hagrat and Skorba Temples. Works on the 3D recording tender has just started and will be completed by the end of December.
Through a mix of Public and BOV Private Funding, we are continuing on the construction of a new visitors’ centre and the conservation of the Tarxien Temples. An ERDF application for the conservation of the site has also been filed with PPCD. Project value is €2,028,101
At Fine Arts through Private HSBC Private funding, we are constructing a modern Fine Arts reference library. Works relating to the redecoration of Museum Halls and upgrading of electrical system have just been completed for the launch of the Caravaggio Exhibition.
At Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, we have the EDRF project which is expected to be completed by 2008. Other works ancillary to the main project and the visitor centre are also envisaged. Additional equipment to the existing Environmental Monitoring System (which was funded by the Pre-Accession funds) has been installed and paid for out of the InterContinental/Corinthia/HSBC 1 Euro per Night Scheme.
At the Palace State Rooms and Palace Armoury we have a project related to new entrance facilities. At the Palace Armoury, we have on ongoing project for the redecoration of Hall B consisting of better lighting and display system, which will be completely finished by first quarter of 2008. Through Private Funding GasanMamo Insurance, we are enhancing the display experience. Project consists in the installation of more Mannequins and Interpretation Panels. At the State Rooms, we have plans to continue with the restoration project of the Paladini Chapel, the restoration of the Clock Tower at the courtyard and other conservation jobs within the State Rooms and corridor areas.
At Ggantija Temples, we have just completed works on the Interim Visitors' Area which will consists of a new Ticketing System and display area. Through Private Vodafone Foundation Private Funding, we are working on the design and installation of an Internal Walkway and other interpretation solutions. A mini-project for the replacement of the existing concrete wall is being carried out. An ERDF application for the conservation of the site has also been filed with PPCD. Project value is €2,820,896
At Ghar Dalam, we are upgrading the internal Walkway at the Cave itself in addition to other minor improvements.
At the Natural Museum of Natural History, we have upgraded the Mammal's Hall with part funding from the Xara Palace/HSBC 1 Euro per Night Scheme.
There are plans for the upgrading of the War Museum. Project is expected to start towards the end of 2007 to be completed towards the end of 2008. Initial budgeted expenditure is Lm 200K.
At St. Paul’s Catacombs, we have a major project planned for 2008 which will consist of a number of surveys, Environmental Monitoring, a new Walkway/Lighting installation, better visitor’s area facilities, amongst others. An ERDF application for the conservation of the site has also been filed with PPCD. Project value is €4,206,299
At Verdala Palace, under the Patronage of the President of Malta, Heritage Malta is being entrusted with the conservation and restoration of the Painted Vaults. This project is being funded by a number of entities (Gasan Group, Tumas Group, Polidano Group, MFSA). Phase I is now completed and the actual expenditure reached Lm 47K. Phase II of the project has just started with an estimate of Lm 33K.
At Abbatija Tad-Dejr, a valorisation and conservation project is being planned in partnership with Din l-Art Helwa which partnered with Heritage Malta on this project on a 50/50 basis.
For Fort St. Angelo, Heritage Malta is considering the submission of a Structural Funds application during the second turn of ERDF applications once they are issued.
Across all Malta and Gozo Museums and Sites, we are undergoing an Interconnectivity project which will allow us to connect all Museums and Sites using VoIP. This system will facilitate other solutions related to payroll and ticketing system. This project is now at an advanced stage and it is expected that all HM will be interconnected during the first half of 2008.
More AudioVisual System are being planned to be installed in all Heritage Malta Sites during 2008/09. So far we have AV systems at the Palace Armoury, St. Paul's catacombs. At the Hypogeum we have installed a new Audiovisual Multilingual system which is right now at commissioning stage although it is already being used by visitors. Other installations are in the pipeline.
