MASTER OF ARTS IN CULTURAL HERITAGE MANAGMENT - MA C.H.M.

Admission
The programme

In recent years there has been a growing interest in Malta’s cultural heritage assets. The refurbishment and creation of museums, the increase in exhibitions, the understanding of the importance of attracting cultural tourism, the increase in conservation and restoration projects, the growing awareness of tangible and intangible cultural heritage assets all point to a greater concern for cultural heritage amongst a broader spectrum of the public. In the light of the above, there is a growing need for the management of cultural heritage assets and the sustainable development of such a sector.

The purpose of the Master of Arts in Cultural Heritage Management is to contribute to the formation of management professionals capable of working in this particular sector. In order to achieve this objective, this changeover course provides management skills and knowledge in relevant areas of cultural heritage with particular reference to Mediterranean cultural heritage.

This multidisciplinary course is designed to attract candidates from different fields including graduates in management, tourism studies, music, theatre, conservation, art history, architecture, anthropology and archaeology in order for students to benefit from each other’s knowledge and experience. Apart from providing theoretical tuition, the course also includes practical projects in cultural heritage institutions in Malta and Italy in which the student can learn hands-on whilst applying the theoretical concepts acquired during the course.

The graduate of this programme will be capable of managing museums and sites, organizing cultural events, attracting funding (including EU funding) to cultural heritage, and responding to the needs of the cultural tourism sector in practical terms.

Course applications can be collected and submitted to the University of Malta. For further information contact the University of Malta or visit their website.

THE MASTERS IN APPLIED CONSERVATION - M.CONS.

Admission
The programme

ICMCH resolutely approaches conservation as an academic discipline, and the creation of the M.Cons. is part of the Institute’s attempt to fully integrate conservation to University standards in line with ENCoRE’s objectives and, as of 2007, the outcomes of the Heritage Malta-led ECPL project (here create a link to www.ecpl-project.eu). For this reason, the course addresses specifically students who already have a sound background in conservation: the M.Cons. is open to students who already have completed undergraduate studies in conservation (or have equivalent qualifications).  Moreover, the course is based on clearly defined learning outcomes related to knowledge, skills and competences that were defined during the ECPL project on the parameters indicated within the European Qualifications Framework.  This brings the course to the forefront of conservation-restoration education in Europe.

Apart from featuring a theoretical part, the course includes both a practical component and a research component, thus giving students the opportunity to further develop their knowledge, skills and competences as future professional conservator-restorers. The M.Cons. graduates may, depending on their interest, proceed to read for a PhD or go into practice as conservator-restorers upon receipt of a warrant. The Masters degree is also valid overseas.

Candidates are to choose a path from the following two options:

  • Path 1 - Organic Materials
  • Path 2 - Inorganic Materials
