The programme
If you go round any of our old towns and villages you can easily realise that the conservation and conversion of town houses and ‘houses of character’ has picked up a strong momentum. Although there is widespread interest in this activity and on the need of rehabilitating these houses, one cannot say that all conversions and practices applied in the process are guaranteeing their conservation for future generations. Few evaluate what materials are being used in their restoration and whether these materials are compatible with the existing fabric. Few realize that both the hacking and sand blasting of masonry surfaces is actually ruining these buildings not just aesthetically but also physically.
One may ask: What are the best pratices? What materials should be used to restore these houses? How shall we expose the masonry work? How shall we clean the facades?
The Institute of Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage (ICMCH) of Heritage Malta (HM) felt the need to professionally help all those who are working in this field, those who own a town house or ‘house of character’ and those who are in the process of buying one to safeguard this built heritage. ICMCH is organising a Certificate Course in Caring for Historic Houses for the general public that explains in layman’s terms how one can look after such heritage.
The course will help participants to appreciate better the urban development of our old towns and villages and the architectural development within them. It will also give guidance on the best practices which are to be used in the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation and use of these houses. This will give better knowledge on what is possible to do yourself and when the professional needs to be called in.
Through the various sessions participants will receive authoritative and practical advice for the best care of this architectural heritage.
The 10-hour course will take place at Heritage Malta’s Head Office in Merchants Street on Thursday 22nd, Tuesday 27th and Thursday 29th May, and Tuesday 3rd and Thursday 5th June between 1800 and 2000 and will be delivered by experts who have been professionally trained in the field and who have several years of experience. The final session will be held on site in Zejtun. This course is sold out but will be repeated on the following dates: 17th, 19th, 24th June and 1st, 3rd July. The lecture topics are as follows:

The Introductory Course to Conservation Studies offers a fore-taste of the B.Cons.(Hons) degree course offered by ICMCH. It allows prospective
B.Cons. (Hons) students to acquire a brief but adequate idea
of the field of conservation in the eventuality that the student
might decide to seriously commit to the four-year degree course.
The Introductory course is divided into theory and practical
components.
The theory components include a brief introduction to conservation
& restoration together with an introduction to conservation
science and chemistry for conservation, history of art, history
of architecture and archaeology for conservation.
The practical components focus on line drawing technique,
chemistry and the four main areas of study offered in the
B.Cons. (Hons).
Areas of study offered are:
- Area A: Paintings and Polychrome Sculpture
- Area B: Ceramics, Glass, Metals and Stone
- Area C: Textiles
- Area D: Books and Paper
The course enables the B.Cons. (Hons) prospective student
to prepare for the Entrance Exam, which is a special requirement
for admission into the B.Cons. (Hons) degree course.
Not all those who follow the Introductory Course go on to
do the Entrance Exam. Some follow the course out of interest
in cultural heritage and conservation-restoration. In this
respect the Introductory Course educates the public in general
about conservation of material cultural heritage.
Admission
The course does not assume prior knowledge in the field of
conservation. However, applicants must have a minimum of Ordinary
level education to attend. The language of instruction is
English.
