Rethinking Cultural Heritage: Challenges & Dilemmas
Announcement

The conference is being organised by the Institute of Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage (ICMCH), Heritage Malta, and students reading for the Master Degree in Cultural Heritage Management, in partnership with the University of Malta and Bournemouth University. The main objective of this conference is to give an opportunity to undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as recent graduates to present their research in cultural heritage related disciplines, with a focus on heritage sites and new insights and approaches related to their management.

Since the post war period, various countries have found the urge to use cultural heritage sites to create a national identity, and distinguish themselves from neighbouring countries. Moreover, through the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, cultural and natural heritage sites from various countries have been identified and are being protected and preserved, since these are considered to be of outstanding value to humanity, and thus belong to everyone irrespective of the territory on which they are located.

For the purposes of this conference Cultural Heritage is defined as movable or immovable objects of artistic, architectural, religious, historical, archaeological, ethnographic, palaeontological and geological importance and all other information related to cultural heritage pertaining to any country. Thus, Cultural heritage is considered to be an irreplaceable cultural, social and economic resource and therefore the State should make sure that professional conservators and heritage managers maintain such objects, so that they are preserved for the benefit of future generations.

The study of Cultural Heritage is approached through various disciplines. These include Archaeology, Architecture, Conservation, History of Art, Historical Geography, as well as Cultural Heritage Management, Urban planning, Geoarchaeology, Photography. Scientific areas, such as Chemistry and Biology, are also contributing to the management of cultural heritage sites.

Registration fees

The registration fee is 25 €.. Participants presenting a paper will be exempt from paying the registration fee. We look forward to your attending and participating in this conference.
