SITE VISIT/CLARIFICATION MEETING – 13TH NOVEMBER 2009

As part of the Design Contest for ‘Enhancing the visitor experience in the Ġgantija Heritage Park World Heritage Site’, participants are invited to attend a ‘Site visit/ Clarification Meeting’, which shall also include a walk-around the Ggantija Heritage Park, so as participants can further acquaint themselves better with the site/project as well as raise any queries/clarify issues with respect to the Design Contest. The visit shall be held as follows:

Date:                           Friday 13th November
Time:                           0915 (ferry schedule - www.gozochannel.com)
Meeting place:             Entrance to Ggantija Temples (Car Park)

No further site visits are envisaged during the Contest period.

Prospective Contestants are advised to confirm their attendance for the site visits via email to david.zahra@gov.mt.

Minutes will be taken during the site visit and these will be communicated, together with any clarifications in response to written requests, which are not addressed during the meeting, in writing to all the prospective Contestants. Please refer to News Update 03 which includes the minutes of the ‘site familiarization visit’, as well as clarifications following questions from prospective contestants.

UPDATED SITE SURVEY

An updated drawing (‘.dwg’) has been uploaded in the documents section. This includes the spot levels in the existing car park and the road that leads to the existing Temporary Visitor Centre/Ticket Booth.

Furthermore, the drawing also includes a ‘layer’ where the extents of the site of the proposed Interpretation Centre are clearly identified.

Design Contest - Enhancing the visitor experience in the Ġgantija Heritage Park World Heritage Site

Heritage Malta is launching a Design Contest for ‘Enhancing the visitor experience in the Ġgantija Heritage Park World Heritage Site’.

This forms part of the €9.2 million Archaeological Heritage Conservation Project, 85% of which is co-financed through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and includes works on three sites, namely the Tarxien Temples, the Ġgantija Heritage Park in Xagħra, Gozo and the St. Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat, Malta.

The aim of the €2.5million project at the Ġgantija Heritage Park is to present an organised and pleasant experience, to the circa 150,000 persons who visit the Ġgantija Temples every year. The project also aims at highlighting the landscape setting of the Temples whilst mitigating past interventions which have a negative impact.

The expected outcome, after the implementation of the ERDF project, based on the  chosen design, includes the construction of an ‘Interpretation Centre’ (which shall also act as an orientation point for the other cultural sites in Xagħra), an ‘Exit Point’ (including a souvenir shop and other basic amenities for visitors to the Heritage Park), as well as pathways to link the ‘Interpretation Centre’ to the Temples, and the Temples to the ‘Exit Point’ together with the rehabilitation and landscaping of the Ġgantija Heritage Park, including the restoration and rebuilding of approximately 200m of rubble wall.

All design proposals must give foremost importance to the respect and the safeguarding of the Outstanding Universal Value of the Ġgantija Temples and their setting, as well as the impact on the surrounding urban context.

The closing date for submissions is the 16th December 2009, with the announcement of the results planned for the 19th December 2009 on www.heritagemalta.org/erdf032. All entries shall be exhibited at Gozo between the 23rd December 2009 and 13th January 2010, and at Heritage Malta’s Head Office, Merchant’s Street, Valletta between the 18th January 2010 and 21st February 2010.

Kompetizzjoni għal disinn ta’ proġett biex tittejjeb l-esperjenza ta’ dawk li jżuru it-Tempji tal-Ġgantija.
 
Heritage Malta qiegħda tniedi kompetizzjoni biex jintgħazel id-disinn għall-proġett li għandu l-għan li jtejjeb l-esperjenza ta’ dawk li jżuru it-Tempji tal-Ġgantija fix-Xagħra Għawdex.

Il-kompetizzjoni tifforma parti minn proġett ta’ 9.2 miljun Ewro għall-konservazzjoni tal-Patrimonju Arkeoloġiku. 85% ta’ dan il-proġett qiegħed jiġi ffinanzjat permezz tal-European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) u jinkludi xogħol fuq tlett siti li huma it-Tempji ta’ Ħal Tarxien, it-Tempji tal-Ġgantija u l-Katakombi ta’ San Pawl fir-Rabat, Malta.

Il-proġett tat-Tempji tal-Ġgantija, li ser jiswa żewġ miljun u nofs Ewro, għandu l-għan li  joffri esperjenza organizzata u pjaċevoli għall-viżitaturi, li jilħqu l-mija u ħamsin elf persuna fis-sena. Il-proġett għandu l-għan ukoll li juri t-tempji fil-pajsaġġ tagħhom kif ukoll li jtaffi l-effett negattiv ta’ interventi li saru fuq il-post fil-passat.

Dan il-proġett ser jinkludi Ċentru ta’ Interpretazzjoni li fih ser ikun hemm, fost affarjiet oħra, tagħrif dwar is-siti kulturali l-oħra li jinsabu fix-Xagħra. Ser tinbena ukoll binja żghira qabel il-viżitaturi joħorogu mis-sit, li fih ser ikun hemm servizzi bażiċi u ħanut tas-suvenirs. Dan il-proġett jinkludi ukoll il-bini ta’ passaġġi li ser jgħaqdu ċ-Ċentru ta’ Interpretazzjoni mat-Tempji, u t-Tempji mal-ħruġ, filwaqt li ser ssir ir-rijabilitazzjoni u t-tisbieħ tal-madwar li jinludi il-bini u restawr ta’ madwar 200 metru ta’ ħitan tas-sejjiegħ. Dan kollu ser ikun ibbażat fuq id-disinn rebbieħ ta’ din il-kompetizzjoni.

Id-disinji proposti għandhom iżommu r-rispett u l-ħarsien tal-Valur Universali tat-Tempji tal-Ġgantija u l-pajsaġġ li jinstabu fih, bħala il-punt ċentrali. Barra minn hekk, kull proposta għandha tassigura impatt minimu fuq l-ambjent urban tal-madwar.

Id-data ta’ l-għeluq tas-sottomissjonijiet hija s-16 ta’ Diċembru 2009. Ir-rebbieħ, u r-riżultati tal-kompetizzjoni, ser jiġu mħabbra fid-19 ta’ Diċembru u ippublikati fuq www.heritagemalta.org/erdf032. Is-sottomisjonijiet kollha ser ikunu għall-wiri ġewwa Għawdex bejn it-23 ta’ Diċembru 2009 u t-13 ta’ Jannar 2010 u fl-Uffiċju ta’ Heritage Malta fi Triq il-Merkanti l-Belt Valletta bejn it-18 ta’ Jannar u l-21 ta’ Frar 2010.
