INTRODUCTORY COURSE TO CONSERVATION STUDIES

The Introductory Course to Conservation Studies offers a fore-taste of the B.Cons.(Hons) degree course offered by ICMCH. It allows prospective B.Cons. (Hons) students to acquire a brief but adequate idea of the field of conservation in the eventuality that the student might decide to seriously commit to the four-year degree course. The Introductory course is divided into theory and practical components.

The theory components include a brief introduction to conservation & restoration together with an introduction to conservation science and chemistry for conservation, history of art, history of architecture and archaeology for conservation.

The practical components focus on line drawing technique, chemistry and the four main areas of study offered in the B.Cons. (Hons).

Areas of study offered are:

  • Area A: Paintings and Polychrome Sculpture
  • Area B: Ceramics, Glass, Metals and Stone
  • Area C: Textiles
  • Area D: Books and Paper

The course enables the B.Cons. (Hons) prospective student to prepare for the Entrance Exam, which is a special requirement for admission into the B.Cons. (Hons) degree course.

Not all those who follow the Introductory Course go on to do the Entrance Exam. Some follow the course out of interest in cultural heritage and conservation-restoration. In this respect the Introductory Course educates the public in general about conservation of material cultural heritage.
